1/17/15
The Carroll County Bird Club Mid-Winter Count was held on Saturday, January 17th, 2015. In a Winter where the weather had been notoriously bad, we lucked out. It was cold, but it didn’t snow! Twenty observers in ten different parties covered 34 miles on foot and 277.9 miles by car to record 13,562 individual birds making up 79 species.
Almost half the number of individuals was made up of Canada Geese. As such, this species landed at the head of our top twenty list below. Write-ins included Snow Goose, Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Chipping Sparrow, Eastern Phoebe, and Merlin.
Thanks to everyone who counted! Special thanks to Amy Hoffman who hosted the tally rally at her home in Sykesville.
